The term “Mediterranean diet” encompasses the typical dietary patterns of certain regions of the Mediterranean. It is characterized by the abundance of plant foods (source of antioxidants) such as vegetables, salads, fruits, cereals, pasta, bread, legumes and nuts; virgin olive oil as the main source of fat; moderate consumption of fish (rich in omega-3 fatty acids), poultry and rabbit, dairy products and eggs; small amounts of red meat and low amounts of wine. This diet is low in saturated fat and cholesterol and rich in carbohydrates and fiber. It is usually seasoned with aromatic herbs, onion and garlic that have a certain cholesterol-lowering effect.
Currently, there is sufficient scientific evidence of its beneficial effects in the prevention of certain diseases:
Cardiovascular disease: Thanks to the contribution of mainly monounsaturated fat present in olive oil and the large amount of antioxidants it contains, the Mediterranean diet produces an improvement in the lipid profile (they lower LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides, increasing or maintaining levels of HDL cholesterol); reduces lipid oxidation, reduces the risk of atherothrombosis, and improves endothelial and vascular wall function. It also helps control blood pressure.
Diabetes: The Mediterranean diet, rich in complex carbohydrates (based on the consumption of cereals, vegetables, legumes and fruits) and monounsaturated fatty acids (olive oil) improves glucose levels, insulin resistance and lipid profile.
Obesity: The Mediterranean diet, despite not being a low-fat diet, contributes to the prevention and treatment of obesity, due to its great variety and palatability, as long as the caloric intake is controlled. Obesity is primarily an energy balance disorder. Regular physical activity helps you maintain your ideal weight.
Certain types of cancer: Its incidence decreases with the consumption of olive oil and fats derived from fish (omega-3), antioxidants from fruits and vegetables and fiber.
Also, regular physical exercise, characteristic of what has been the traditional lifestyle in the Mediterranean region and in the rest of the regions of the country, something as simple as walking or walking is an essential part of our lifestyle and our cultural heritage. The Mediterranean diet represents a centuries-old tradition that leads to excellent health.
