The Mediterranean diet, the 2023 diet champion
For the third year in a row, the Mediterranean diet based on fruits, vegetables, fatty fish and olive oil takes first place in the annual ranking of the best diets 2021 of the American site US news.
As every year, the American magazine U.S. News and World Report has scrutinized the diets to award the palm for the best diet 2020 according to various health and fitness criteria. Verdict: for the 3rd year in a row, it is the Mediterranean diet (also called the Cretan diet), composed mainly of fruits, vegetables, fish and olive oil, which comes first in the ranking all categories included among the 41 diets. It is followed by the flexitarian diet and then the D.A.S.H.
THE MANY HEALTH BENEFITS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET
The Mediterranean diet, praised by numerous studies for its health benefits, arrives on the first step of the podium in the category of diets “good for health in general” but it also comes first in the categories of vegetarian diets, easy to follow diets and the best diets for diabetes. It finally arrives in 2nd position in the category of “healthy diets”.
The WW (formerly Weight Watchers) diet is doing well and is ranked 4th as the best overall diet but first place in the ranking of best commercial diets.
The Mediterranean diet or Okinawa is recommended according to many studies for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, but also in the prevention of osteoporosis, depression or cognitive decline.
