What comes to your mind when you hear the words “plant-based diet”? A sad, hungry soul rushing over soft lettuce leaves and dreary celery sticks? Well, we have good news for you – it doesn’t have to be like this! Indeed, there are many myths and misconceptions surrounding terms such as “vegetarian”, “vegan” and “flexitarian”. In this article, we want to clarify some of the most important points, so that you can feel informed and comfortable about the topic of plant-based diets.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO FOLLOW A PLANT-BASED DIET?
The key to following a plant-based diet is proportionality. You don’t have to switch to a strictly vegetarian (no meat) or vegan (no meat or dairy) diet. It’s more about making sure your daily intake is plant-based. Does that still sound restrictive to you? This is probably because you do not yet realize how many foods meet the definition of “plant origin”. Besides the well-known fruits and vegetables (including the tasty and nutritious SunGold kiwifruit of course), nuts, seeds, oils, whole grains and other beans and legumes are central to the diet.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A PLANT-BASED DIET? 1
Even if you’ve never heard of the phrase “plant-based diet”, we bet you are familiar with one of the most popular versions: the Mediterranean diet! Numerous large clinical trials have shown that this diet, with an emphasis on fruits, vegetables, oils and legumes, can reduce the risk of contracting certain diseases, including diabetes and cancer. In addition, studies of older adults have established the link between a plant-based diet on the one hand, and reduced frailty and improved general health on the other.
Did you know ?
In addition to foods of plant origin, a flexitarian diet includes eggs and dairy products such as cheese, as well as an occasional consumption of meat, fish and seafood. The naturally sweet taste of Zespri SunGold kiwifruit makes it an ideal ingredient for many plant-based dishes, no matter which version of the diet you choose!
HOW TO GET ON THE PLANT-BASED DIET?
As with all dietary changes, it’s best to start small and simple. We recommend that beginners set aside one or two evenings per week for a fully vegetarian meal. Indeed, many of your favorite meat dishes can be just as good (if not better!) When you give them a vegetable flavor. Are you addicted to Thai take-out? Then try for example this delicious vegetarian yellow curry recipe, with SunGold kiwifruit, red pepper and crispy cashews. Rich, creamy and naturally sweet, it can be served with steamed broccoli or wild rice for a satisfying vegetable soup. Enjoy your meal !
