Atkins Diet: Analysis of Miracle Diets

Atkins Diet. Analysis of Miracle Diets

The Atkins diet has been with us for many years and has not lost its validity today, as it is one of the most popular diets, which effectively allows us to lose weight quickly, but many of us do not know in depth about its effects on the organism. For this reason, we will carry out an analysis of miracle diets that will feature the Atkins diet.

What is the Atkins diet?
The Atkins diet aims to mobilize body fat from the induction of ketosis, that is, through the severe restriction of carbohydrates in the diet, glycogen stores are emptied and for around 14 days, no more than 60 are offered grams of carbohydrates per day, therefore, fats are used as an energy source to form ketone bodies.

After this first phase of induction where carbohydrates are very few, foods with carbohydrates are progressively included, but the inclusion of bread, pasta or sugar is not allowed. On the contrary, it is allowed to freely eat meats in general, eggs, cheeses, oils, and other concentrated sources of proteins and fats.

Why does it allow you to lose weight?
With a high concentration of ketone bodies in the blood, we do not feel hungry, as the appetite is inhibited. In addition, high protein intake also favors satiety, therefore, although the amount is not limited, individuals who are subjected to the Atkins diet do not feel hungry and therefore eat less.

In addition, by not providing hydrates, the body has no alternative but to produce ketone bodies to feed the brain, and for this, it uses body fats and the minimum of carbohydrates that are consumed, it is also used by the body quickly.

Diet mistakes
The calories provided by carbohydrates are less than 20%, when in reality, between 50-60% of the total energy value is recommended. And the calories provided by fat can reach 45% when it is not advisable to exceed 30%. Of course, the protein intake is also higher than the recommendation and with this, it is more than proven that it is not a balanced diet.

On the other hand, the diet uses ketosis to consume fat, and the body uses ketone bodies when there is no alternative, but it is not normal to use these substances as a source of energy.

In addition to subjecting the body to this alternative state, the diet is not recommended if we suffer from dyslipidaemia or kidney problems, as high fat intake can alter cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood, as well as protein consumption is very high.

Likewise, eradicating such popular foods as pasta, bread or rice, is a clear sign that the diet will not sustain it for long, it does not teach us to eat but allows us to lose weight in a certain time, but when we finish the diet, we can suffer a serious rebound effect because we do not know how to deal with those foods that were prohibited.

Finally, ketone bodies can cause gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea and vomiting, if they reach very high concentrations in the blood. Therefore, it cannot be sustained for long if we want to take care of our health.
